Estonia and Latvia - Riga

Riga was a major centre of the Hanseatic League during the 1200s to 1400s but most of its historic buildings from those times have since been destroyed by war or fire. Its Soviet past is still everywhere to be seen. Bastion Hill park is a site where many Latvians were shot during the Soviet army's final attempt to maintain control before Latvia regained independence in 1991.
